About Jaime López

Jaime is the first in his family to attend college and understands the importance an education and/or a technical career provides an opportunity for continued success. He believes our students should be provided with the opportunities and resources that previous generations were not afforded. His ability to bring resources and work with state and regional leaders makes him the ideal individual to fight for our students. Jaime holds a graduate degree from California State University, Long Beach.

Jaime and his wife Vanessa, an elementary school teacher, are the proud parents of two Whittier Union High School District students. Their son Benito is currently participating in the California High School’s Health Academy and Rio Hondo College’s Concurrent Dual Enrollment which provides high school students with the opportunity to enroll in college courses for college credit. Their daughter Yarely attends California State University, Northridge where she is majoring in sociology.

My Policies

School Safety First

Long before COVID-19, school safety has been my priority because students and our families must feel safe and secure before meaningful learning can occur. My plan to ensure school safety includes creating a Director of School Health & Safety who has the knowledge and the background to serve as a clearinghouse, coalition builder, and advocate for safety & conflict resolution policies.

Secondly, considering the increased use at our schools and the disciplinary consequences affecting their academic success, lets establish more significant preventative measures on vaping. We need to partner with middle schools, LA County of Education, and parenting/community groups on such preventative measures.

Safeguarding Our Public-School System

As your Trustee, I plan to strengthen our public school system by fully funding our classroom and guarding against outside interest that may divert funding from our public schools.

Establish a stronger curriculum foundation

While we should applaud the high graduation rates, we need to look at additional methods of improving the math, language arts, and physical fitness scores.

We need to explore providing test preparation and tutoring services immediately after 8th grade so that students have a more definite command of the A-G graduation requirements. Move forward to expand concurrent dual enrollment opportunities to take college classes through the great partnership that already exists with Rio Hondo College. Furthermore, we need to work with Rio Hondo College to expand the course offerings in the Summer session.

Respecting Our Teachers

We need to harness the talent and leadership within the district’s teaching community by providing more opportunities in professional growth.

Teach real-world skills that apply to the needs of future employers

We need to implement life skills/work culture classes at the District level. There is an urgent need to start focusing on what the employers want aside from technical skills. Employers want to see if an employee can: manage their time (time management), read people’s behavior correctly (emotional intelligence), conversation skills within a company culture, and manage social media presence outside and within the company.

Advocate for a world-class district and excellence in academics

We must develop stronger partnerships amongst local, regional, and state officials to assist us with the necessary resources the students, teachers, and parents need for the overall enhancement of the high school experience. I will use my established relationships with local, county, and state officials to advocate for funds and policies that benefit the district.

Increase public and parental involvement

I believe that school site council meetings need to change to the evenings to increase parental involvement. As your board member, I will also increase transparency and accountability by establishing live stream board meetings and archived the recordings on the district’s website. Additionally, I believe we need to update our district’s website to make it more user friendly and provide Spanish content for our parents.

Create a culture of inclusiveness

I believe in equity and inclusiveness, and we must foster a district where students feel respected for their individualism. We also need to celebrate our cultural diversity as well; therefore, I will seek to implement ethnic studies in our district.
